Vince Young Wants to Play…or He Wants Out

vickcollinsFollowing a season ending knee injury in 2008 and some highly publicized questions about Vince’s confidence to lead the team, the Titans QB says that he’s, “…ready to play ball. If they’re not ready for me to play ball, then somebody is.” However, Kerry Collins is penciled in as the starter for the 2009 season and it doesn’t look like Jeff Fisher is looking to make a change.

One year ago many were predicting that the Titans would be a strong contender in the AFC South. Those that made this prediction were right but I would venture to say that very few would have guessed that Kerry Collins would lead the team to the playoffs. The slow, strong-armed QB, with a history of not being able to evade the pass rush, was quite effective at the helm of a Titans offense that features a tremendous running game.

For Young, this is a tough situation to come back from. Collins, at 36, probably has a couple years left in him as long as Jeff Fisher is able to protect him in the backfield. Collins also has likely won over the Tennessee locker room that was looking for leadership after Vince’s “meltdown” early last season. Even so, it wouldn’t take much to convince me that Collins will not be the same player this year.

Kerry Collins has been a journeyman QB that has only put up good numbers a couple of times in his 15-year career and Young has the ability to make game changing plays that Collins does not. Young and Collins have similar stats over their time in Tennessee but on the “what have you done for me lately” meter, Collins is currently ahead of the former franchise guy.

I don’t see Young starting the year at QB in Tennessee but I could envision a scenario where he replaces Collins at some point this season. That is, if he is still in a Titans uniform by then.
