The Vikings were one play away from a field goal attempt to advance to the Super Bowl when Favre threw his last pass of the game, season, and possibly his career. Unfortunately for Favre and the Vikings the pass attempt was intercepted and the Saints went on to win in overtime.
It is true that the across the body pass was not what you would normally expect from a 19-year veteran, even “the gunslinger.” The better play for #4 would have been to pump fake and run out of bounds setting up a winning field goal. Regardless of these details it is important to remember the big picture. Favre came back because he had something to prove to himself and the Packers. While I would never agree that this last play erased his great season, the disappointing finish did leave the question of whether he is willing to walk away from football up in the air.
That was Sunday.
Monday, the annual Favre retirement process started with the inevitable ESPN report that it is “highly unlikely” that he will return. Hopefully members of the news media don’t get too excited about this report because the information came from the least reliable source for this story, Brett Favre. This kicks off a series of stories we will see over the next several months about his health, his state of mind, his motivation, and his 1st, 2nd, and 3rd final decisions.
My guess is that he’ll be back in a Viking uniform by the beginning of next season. He has a very talented, young team around him and could realistically make another run at the Super Bowl at 40 years old. Either way, Minnesota better hope that his decision comes before the NFL 2010 Draft. Head Coach Childress will want all options on the table if Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels are all he’s got.
