“…then they’ll understand”

Favre is a Viking“They’ll understand.” That of course, according to Brett Favre, is if those in Green Bay are true Packers fans. This is a pretty arrogant statement coming from the “ah shucks,” salt of the earth guy we have come to know over the past two decades. I have heard lots of commentators, many of whom are falling all over themselves to hand the Vikings the NFC title, that are critical of this statement so I will simply say, “poor showing Favre,” and move on.

Number 4 switching to the division rival has been the plan since he left Green Bay last summer feeling slighted and settled on New York. He says that this is not revenge but you have to believe that vengeance is a big part of his motivation. That and the 12 million dollars he will make this season. Even still, I bet he would stand on top of the Minnesota goal post and make it rain like Pacman Jones in a Vegas strip club if he ended the season 2-0 against the Pack.

So much can happen in so little time. Three weeks ago this saga was over and the Vikings were back to their underwhelming backfield competition. What changed? Training camp is just about over, and like Michael Strahan before the Giants won the Superbowl in 2008, he wanted no part of camp. I’m sure his new teammates really appreciate him parachuting in to save them from themselves after they have worked hard in two-a-days all summer long.

The “new” diagnosis assuring Favre that he will be able to perform, the romantic story of Brad Childress making one last call like a desperate ex, and the helicopter following Favre to camp like he had just committed a double murder is everything the NFL could have hoped for. What was once a ho-hum kind of off-season has really picked up with Favre and Vick back in uniform. BTW, which do you think would have pissed the Cheeseheads off more, Favre in Vikings’ purple or Vick playing in Lambeau?

Despite the inevitable circus that will surround their first match up in Minnesota on October 5th, I will be parked on my couch like it’s the Superbowl on November 1st to watch the storyline unfold as Favre runs out of the tunnel to a swarm of boos in Green Bay. It will be fantastically uncomfortable like fanatic protesters yelling at a healthcare reform town hall meeting.

I can hear it now. “TRAITOR! Why are you ruining America…Favre?!?”
