Saints or Colts, Who is More Vulnerable?

brees_manningThe two teams with the best chance of going undefeated this regular season (though neither did) play their first meaningful games since early December in Saturday’s playoff matchups. The Colts and Saints backed into the playoffs and now hope to revive the magic of midseason against teams that looked great last weekend.

The Colts rested their stars in two uninspiring losses while their coach insisted the team was not focused on a perfect season and players stood behind him. Maybe the coaching staff should take a look at recent Colt history because since 1999 the Colts are 0-3 in division playoff games following a first round bye week. Those are the kind of numbers that make the betting side of me consider a wager; especially with a 6.5 point spread. It is less likely that the Colts can get off to a big start early and shaking the rust off means a close game against a tough Ravens team.

The Saints start Saturday’s game under very different circumstances. They have not looked good since their celebrated week 12 win against the patriots at home. The public anointing that took place after that win was short lived. In the final five games of the regular season the Saints went 2-3. This wasn’t because the starters weren’t on the field. It was due to a defense that couldn’t get pressure on the opposing QBs and a New Orleans offense that wasn’t playing at the level that got the team to 11-0. The Saints are normally great at home and better be against the Cardinals pass attack. I think this one is close with the best defensive pass rush making the difference.

No matter who you are pulling for in either game, this should be a great day of football.
