The NFL would like to expand the regular season to 18 games and eliminate two preseason games by 2012. Seems like a harmless proposal on the surface but this obvious cash grab for the league could have a dramatic impact on players and the game as we know it.
One consequence of the current 4 game preseason format is that each year some starting players end up injured before the season begins. Most of us remember a 2008 season without QB Tom Brady. However, it is unlikely that these injuries would disappear by turning 2 preseason games into regular season games. In fact, a starter like Brady will see 1 quarter in preseason game 1, 2 quarters in game 2, and so on totaling approximately 9-10 quarters. In the new proposal, this same player would likely see 13-16 quarters over the same period. More action and more opportunity for a break down or injury.
Another consideration for the NFL and Players Association is the opportunity for live action for rookies and other players trying to make a roster. To be completely honest the first 2-3 games of the preseason are pretty bad, not quite as bad as arena football (sorry Bon Jovi), but not good either. Even still, it is useful time spent by coaches to sort their teams out. Switching from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4? Is your $100 million defensive lineman MIA (sorry Redskin fans)? This is a time to test your plan B.
The final concern that Ray Lewis and other veteran players have already stated clearly is the matter of compensation. Current contracts account for a 16 game regular season schedule. Adding two more games means more punishment, potentially shorter careers, and more work for less money. No one would willingly accept that.
No matter where you stand on this one the current atmosphere between the league and the players union will make this one a tough sell. Whether or not we see a 2012 expansion, it will be an interesting couple years of discussion.
