The 1st round of the 2010 NFL Draft is going to be up against the Thursday night “Must See TV” time slot this week as the powerhouse NFL brand grabs an extra day. Round 1 is usually the least dramatic aside from teams trading up or down and ridiculous Raider picks. Even though it includes the most well known talent coming from college to the pro game, the coverage is barely tolerable.
According to reports from multiple sources, Mel Kiper used to go the entire draft broadcast (2 days) without using the bathroom. This kind of dedication to deliver tremendously obscure information that will prove to be useless is matched with a misplaced intensity that makes for a “wonderful” show. Can we just get a ticker at the bottom of the screen while we watch the QB Camp segment with ESPN’s Jon Gruden?
You’ll see what I mean when you watch him tell Colt McCoy he needs to drop the accent. It’s hilarious! Check it out:
Instead, the focus has been and will continue to be about the QB position with four big name players from even bigger programs making the leap into the NFL. Sam Bradford is on most mock draft boards as the 1st overall pick. He’s going to the Rams to replace Marc Bulger as the guy in the backfield running from defenders. Bradford is big and strong but sat out his senior season with a shoulder injury. Hopefully durability isn’t an issue here.
Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy have questions hanging over their heads also but the biggest question mark has got to be the golden boy, Tim Tebow. Many, including Kiper, believe that Tebow will be more successful as a RB because of his elongated delivery and the perception that he is a Florida system guy. Either way he will be a project and, therefore, more likely to slide to the second round.
All things considered, this is shaping up to be fairly underwhelming. I would rather watch The Office or Fringe this Thursday night while checking the draft board on my iphone. I’ll tune in when ESPN starts broadcasting meaningful football analysis following the conclusion of the weekend. Stay tuned for the post draft wrap up here at AFJ.
