McNabb to Redskins

For several years leading up to the 2009 season the criticism of the Eagles has been that star QB Donovan McNabb didn’t have the weapons he needed (the one exception being 2004 when Terrell Owens was brought into the mix) to be successful. For 2010 the script, as they say, has been flipped.

On Monday Philadelphia dealt McNabb, the face of their franchise, to NFC East rival Washington Redskins for a 2nd round draft pick this year and a 4th rounder in 2011. By doing this the Eagles are taking what Andy Reid has said was “the best deal on the table.” Since the trade was announced the reaction from most analysts has been the same; Reid miscalculated.

Trading a Pro Bowl QB to a team in the division seems to set the stage for Favre like drama. McNabb will be motivated and as we learned after he was benched in 2008, a motivated McNabb is dangerous. The former Eagle will also have new head coach and offensive genius Mike Shanahan calling the shots from the sideline. With McNabb, Shanahan has the pieces in place to challenge in the NFC East.

In order for Washington to succeed, however, others have to lose. The Eagles may have just moved out of contention behind 3 teams with star QBs under center. That said, many questions remain.

Will Kevin Kolb develop into the starter Philadelphia needs?

Will Andy Reid pull off a playoff run without Westbrook or McNabb to lead the team?

Can the Redskins finally live up to preseason hype?

Only time will tell.
