Broncos committed to Cutler as their QB?

With Terrell Owens landing in another NFL city, LaDainian Tomlinson taking a pay cut to play for the Chargers, and Tony Gonzalez looking for a trade away from a team with an improved defense, new QB, and the 3rd overall pick in the draft; Jay Cutler is not the player I would have predicted to be the current top story. Pro Bowl QB Jay Cutler has flown under the radar for most of his short career. In interviews he comes across as confident but even keel; certainly not someone to engage in a feud with his new coach, Josh McDaniels.

Jay Cutler

That of course assumes that McDaniels, following in the footsteps of an offensive guru in Mike Shanahan, doesn’t undermine the coach/QB relationship by seeking his former backup QB, Matt Cassel in a trade for Cutler. This series of events adds evidence to my theory that Pats Coach Bill Belichick, the evil genius in a homeless man’s attire, may not always be the best mentor to future coaches (see Charlie Weiss, Romeo Crennel, and Eric Mangini since his first season with the Jets).

Nice work Josh. You stepped into your first Head Coaching job with a team that was ranked 2nd in offence and 29th in defense and you look to move your pro bowl quarterback? Perhaps you’re shaking things up on the wrong side of the ball. Especially since Chris Simms, who completed just one pass over the last two seasons, is number 2 on your depth chart at QB.

Not surprisingly, several sources recently reported that at least 10 teams have expressed interest in Cutler, who is reportedly asking to be traded. However, the rookie coach continues to say to anyone who will listen that the Broncos are committed to “the player” as their QB. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds and who wins the race to become the least favorite Bronco in Denver. Either way, if Cutler is not in the lineup in the Mile High City, McDaniels will likely loose his chance to win a wide open AFC West Division Title.
